In The Spotlight: Italian Design Lighting By Fontana Arte
Occasionally we place a brand in the spotlight and learn more about the company’s history, products and design philosophy. Today we have chosen the Italian design lighting manufacturer Fontana Arte.
Fontana Arte’s history lies in the construction industry. In 1881, Luigi Fontana founded a similar company that specialised in producing glass. Towards the end of the 19th century, Fontana was known for its unique, handmade glass creations.
During the Interbellum, Luigi decided that it was time to change direction. Therefore in 1931, he formed a partnership with Gio Ponti. At the time, Gio was editor of Domus, a popular Italian design magazine and also one of the founders of ‘The Italian Industrial Design Association‘. Together they designed various products such as the Pirellone lamps and the Tavolino coffee table (1932).
This collaboration resulted in the first iconic lamp by Fontana: the 0024 hanging lamp. This successful design is a timeless classic that will still enhance any interior to this day.
This first success made them hungry for more. So Gio Ponti began to focus on prestigious interior products. These products were incorporated in a new branch called Fontana Arte (1932).
The talented glassmaker Pietro Chiesa was recruited with the launch of this new product series. Pietro designed hundreds of products for the company, including the Cortoccio vase and the Luminator floor lamp.
Over the next few years, all kinds of famous and less well-known designers created products for Fontana Arte. Designers such as David Chipperfield, Vico Magistretti, Steven Holl contributed to the brand’s name and reputation at home and abroad.
Even now Fontana Arte is renowned for its unique and elegant lighting. Furthermore the company is market leader in the production of glass lighting fixtures for homes, offices and industrial buildings.
The Fontana Arte Catalogue
The best way to get to know a lighting manufacturer is by taking a look at its portfolio. Because Fontana Arte has an extensive catalogue we are unable to display all its models so we have selected five of its fantastic designs:
Fontana Arte Three-Sixty
This lamp takes its name from its flexibility – it can rotate 360°. Flexibility and functionality with a highly attractive aesthetic. The Fontana Arte Three-Sixty is available as a table lamp or a floor lamp. Both models are available in matte white, dark grey, coloured aluminium or chrome.
Fontana Arte Wig
This stunning hanging lamp was designed by Chris Hardy, an American designer from Atlanta. His creation was revealed at Euroluce 2011 and immediately received positive reactions.
The Fontana Arte Wig looks like an abstract white flower. It is made from metal plates with a shiny finish and is hung with discreet metal cables. It is the perfect showpiece for any interior.
Fontana Arte Yumi
When you see this stylish standing lamp, it’s not surprising that it won the ADI Design Index 2012 award. Thanks to its clean lines it is almost completely absorbed by the interior. This Yumi lamp has a frame of composite material with a carbon fibre finish.
Fontana Arte Blom
Andreas Engesvik designed this playful table lamp for Fontana Arte. He took his inspiration for the design from nature. The name of this lamp stems from the Norwegian word ‘blomst’, which means flower.
It is one of the newcomers in the brand’s design collection but we predict a great future for this model. With a height measuring 24 cm and a diameter of 15 cm, this lamp look at home on any table. The Fontana Arte Blom is available in four different colours: grey, red, green and yellow.
Fontana Arte Botree
Who said that outdoor lighting couldn’t look great? This Fontana Arte Botree proves it can. Its simple, clean lines provide a modern look that will appeal to everyone.
Thought has also gone into the ecological aspect – this outdoor light actually consists of LED strips. The Botree is therefore energy efficient and has a very long lifespan.
